About McKinney Vets
The practice was founded in 1950 by Peter Hargreaves and Harry Fox after their return from serving in the Second World War. The main premises in Broughton was purchased in the 1960s, and a third partner (Ricky Rushton) joined in 1967.
The practice continued as Hargreaves, Fox and Rushton until 1986 when Peter & Harry retired. Rick Browne who had joined the Practice in 1978 became a partner, and the Practice name changed to Rushton & Browne. In the 1980s the increase in Pet animal work began to radically alter the workload from mainly farm animals to a genuinely mixed practice.
Bill McKinney joined the practice in 1988 and became a partner in 1998, changing the title to Rushton, Browne & McKinney. Small animal work continued to expand over the period, and we purchased our second surgery in Millom in 1992 to help cope with this. Rickey Rushton retired in 2004 and the practice title changed to the current Browne & McKinney.
More About Us
That is 60 years the business has been serving the veterinary needs of this beautiful corner of Southwest Cumbria from Millom to Holmrook, Eskdale and the Duddon Valley to Coniston, Bouth, and the whole of the Furness Peninsula.
During that time there has been a tremendous change in the type of work and services which we are now able to provide with a strong practice team made up of veterinary surgeons backed up by experienced receptionists.
In January 2013, we took over the remaining farm work from Church Walk Vets in Ulverston. Now more farmers in the local area can benefit from our services, with five full-time vets maintaining the livestock.
Becoming McKinney Vets
McKinney Veterinary Practice is proud to remain an independent practice. This means that as a client and pet owner, the treatment and advice can be tailored to your needs. There is no pressure for our team to meet targets set by the distant owners like many corporate practices.
We also have a branch surgery at 1 Mainsgate Road, Millom (LA18 4LP). Appointments are available afternoons Monday to Friday and Wednesday mornings by telephoning the main reception on 01229 716230.
